Knox Junior High School - Language Arts Dept.
111013_110633_0.jpgWelcome to the Language Arts Home Page!

In this course, students will write and read with a more critical eye than they have in the past.

Students will increase the  complexity of what they read and write as well as broaden their knowledge of  literary texts and quality authors.  Their use of language in speaking and writing will become more sophisticated as they learn new techniques from reading the works of master writers and as they use these techniques in their own compositions. This course will give the students opportunities to analyze and respond, orally and in writing, to a variety of texts.  Throughout each quarter, students will address an essential focus question in response to reading.

Throughout the year, teachers are working vertically with 6-12 grade teachers to assure our curriculum standards meet the needs of our students.

Language Arts Tests: Due to the use of common assessments, there is a risk of a breach in test security; therefore, teachers will go over tests in class only after the test has been administered and graded.  However, the tests will not be sent home.  If you would like to see the test, please make an appointment for you and your child to go over it at the school with the teacher.

GRADE CODES IN PAC: (What do they mean?)
0 -- did not do assignment
1 -- absent
2 -- ISS
3 -- field trip
Z -- caught cheating
X -- placeholder that does not count against the student
PLAGIARISM:  One HUGE misconception that students have is that rewriting something is not plagiarism, because they are "putting it in their own words." Well, if the source is not officially acknowledged, IT IS PLAGIARISM!
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY:  Students are expected to do their own work on all assignments.
GRADING AND MAKE-UP POLICY: The numerical grade for each nine weeks will be based on 50% major tests, 30% quiz grades and 20% daily work. It is the student's responsibility to obtain and complete assignments missed when absent.  Our district policy states students have one day to make up work for each excused date.  Otherwise, a zero will be marked in the gradebook for all missing work.  Students should be aware that a zero (0) on any assignment could be devastating to their averages.
